There are many things that you can do to improve your home’s indoor air quality. After vacuuming, dusting, and changing your HVAC’s air filters, you can enlist help from the plant kingdom to purify your air, naturally.
Houseplants do more than just take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Many of them help to get rid of common toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide that enter homes through cleaning products, car exhaust from attached garages, and fuel-based heating systems.
Here are five plants that double as attractive home accessories and air scrubbers.
1. English Ivy
The English ivy has delicate leaves that complement all types of home decor. It also helps remove harmful toxins that come from paint products, carpets, and other building materials. The English Ivy is also one of the more lower maintenance species, thriving in both shady and sunny places.
2. Dracaena
The dracaena, or dragon tree, is a cleaning powerhouse that filters out indoor air toxins, such as xylene and trichloroethylene. It comes in different colors and does well in full sun. With proper care, the Dragon Tree plant will last for many years.
3. Peace Lily
The peace lily plant specifically removes carbon monoxide from indoor air. It’s easy to maintain; you’ll know that it needs water when it starts to slightly droop.
4. Spider Plant
The spider plant made NASA’s list of top plants that clean indoor air. The Spider Plant combats benzene build up in homes. It’s available at most home improvement stores. Bonus: This is a pet-friendly plant. (Not all plant species are healthy to have around animals. Review this list from the ASPCA before selecting any plant.)
5. Aloe Vera
While aloe vera plants are best known for their healing properties, they also do wonders to improve indoor air quality. These succulents are easy to keep and need very little water.
